Last night after battling my way through a busy Birmingham New Street, I eventually settled in to a performance of 'Miss Julie' at The Old Joint Stock Theatre. Re- interpreted by the talented Director/Actor Andrew Cole. Apparently this play has been a versatile vehicle over the many years being placed in different genres and political situations. Its essentially about the way we live, our aspirations, hopes, fears, desires, and Power, all necessary for our existence in the first place, and asks the audience to look within themselves to realise what they have become. Its though provoking, and wonderful fun for the actors as there roles change through this short play. In a word its a good performance by all three actors, they invite you into the play, with the symbolic offering of party nibbles, and eye contact, all of the characters are endearing and familiar. Sarah Mc Caffreys character Christine, so solid and reliable, always bringing the subject matter into focus, pragmatic and reflective. James Allens John, the solid masculine figure, at first regimented, latterly evolves into a optimistic controlling personality, a pleasure to watch as it complimented Clara Jacksons Julie. The lady of the house, spoiled, bored, arrogant and dangerous, completely transforms to become a sheep to Johns evolving dominance towards the end of the play. One man, two women, perhaps a reliable formula, but non the less most enjoyable.
The last performance I believe is tonight at the old joint stock Theatre, if your free, grab the chance of a excellent hour or so of entertainment.
