This is a must do on your visit to Scotland. Not because your seeking laser shows and modern day hokum. You have to do the memorial because its not what you expect. It stands above the fields where William Wallace led his troops to victory at The Battle of Sterling Bridge. You ascend with the obligatory cardio vascular workout expected of the Victorians, as Jeanette grasped the stonework with some trepidation as she hates spiral stone staircases that get higher, and higher. You catch your breath to admire the somewhat slightly bent sword apparent of the great Wallace himself.
And then as you arrive at the top (the Crown), and its all taken away again. My partner likened it to the tower in 'Lord of the Rings' and its that alright, you first encounter a remarkably low wall, which invites you to the world of Vertigo!, I have never had it, you probably will now!!.
On the day of my visit there was a robust wind flowing over the top of the tower, which comprised of a series of conjoined Gothic arches; I found it powerfully emotive. I remembered walking up to 'Tintagel Castle' in my 20's on such a wind driven day I could almost lean against it!. So such is the effect of this Tower, don't visit on a quiet sunny day, visit it at the height of a Storm!. Re-charge your soul.
